From its beginning in 1870, The Metropolitan Museum of Art has published catalogues of special exhibitions and guides to its permanent collection. A vast and diverse public is reached through the Museum's various publications, which now include—in addition to the exhibition and collection catalogues and periodicals, such as the quarterly Metropolitan Museum of Art Bulletin and the annual Metropolitan Museum Journal—a wide range of educational publications and multimedia, including online features, CD-ROMs, and video.

The Bibliography is comprised of the nearly 2,000 Metropolitan Museum of Art publications since 1964, and is further enriched by other publications whose primary focus is on Metropolitan Museum works of art. It serves as a central portal for research and a teaching tool on the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Browse these titles classified by thematic category (i.e. Colonial American Art or Korean Art or European Art in the Renaissance), the respective departments of the Museum (i.e. Ancient Near Eastern Art or Photographs or The Costume Institute), author's last name, title, year of publication, and publication type. Each title further display links into additional information in Watsonline, the central library catalogue of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, JSTOR for Bulletin and Journal articles, or more generally WorldCat. In addition, links to directly relevant content on the Heilbrunn Timeline of Art History will be provided.
